Bourbon

The 5th graders get to sign up for safety patrol at the boys school, and Bourbon signed up at the beginning of the year, but got assigned to March (they get to do it for a month) so he was super excited that March was here so he could be on the safety patrol! Here he is sporting his special jacket, watching the bike rack. :)

Every day after school he switches back and forth with another kid, and one helps the kids cross the road to get to their cars or to walk home, and the other patrols the bike rack to make sure no unauthorized kids are around it. :)

We had band night this week. Any 5th grader that wanted to be in the 6th grade junior high band next year had to come try out. Bourbon really want to play percussion, but it was full before we got through the instruments. They had already had a band night previously for some of the other elementary schools that feed into that junior high, and so there was only 1 spot left for this band night, and someone else snagged it up before we got through. But he enjoyed trying out for it anyways!

They had like 10 insturments and you had to go through each of them and give them a try, and at each "station" you got either a plus or minus next to that instrument depending on your natural ability with it, to help place you with an instrument.

Roman was dying to play the instruments, so he tried out the sax and the clarinet, and he can't wait to be in junior high.

Here's Bourbon with his best friend Stew, who also signed up for band that night. He's going to play saxaphone!

And the winner is........ the french horn!

The guy who was in charge of this instrument had Bourbon sing a few notes, the guy would sing a note and have Bourbon repeat it to see if he could match the same pitch, and he did. The guy said you have to be able to match pitch to be able to play the french horn, that you have to have an ear for it, and that it is one of the more challenging instruments to play. He wholeheartedly urged Bourbon to sign up to play it because he felt Bourbon would work well with it! So Bourbon said yes! An added bonus; the school provides french horns and I don't have to buy or rent and instrument! Score! :)

He gets to enroll for the 6th grade this week, the counselors from the junior high came by their school yesterday and dropped off the packet and talked to them about it. He got to pick his electives. He chose beginning brass as first choice (for band and his french horn), he picked choir for his second choice, and then third choice was Home Economics and fourth choice was art. So we shall see what he ends up in! I'm not sure I am ready to have him in Junior high!!!!
