Our story

So after my blog about Alan & I going through so much and making through on the other side, I had several people ask me how me made it through, and how we worked through so much stuff. This was a blog that pretty much said it all that I posted years ago, so I thought I would just repost it for those that were interested in 'our story'.

my God is an awesome God!
Current mood: grateful

I went to church last night so I could sleep in this morning, and the ending question to the sermon was "When was the last time you told someone who was not a Christ follower about something great God has done in your life". And I wish I could say all the time, but the truth is I am not very good at the whole witnessing thing, and I'm not sure why. I've never been comfortable sharing about God or Jesus unless someone specifically asks or brings it up, and I'm trying to get better. I remember before I was a fully functioning christian, when people used to witness to me or talk about God, how fake and phoney they sounded to me, they rarely sounded real to me, and I don't want to come off like that to anyone, but then again I'm not sure why I care. I know a big part of being a christian is to share the love of Jesus, and to help others find their way to him, but that is my area of opportunity and I hope I get better at it. Because my life is sooo much better now that I have God in it. It's hard to explain to someone who doesn't know what it means to have God in your life, and it's hard to explain the power of God when they've never experienced it. It's hard for me to explain how I know it is God doing things in my life and not just fate or coincidence, but I KNOW, I really KNOW in my heart that God does things for me, and if you don't have that faith or that belief in God, it all sounds phoney when someone who does tries to explain it. To me anyways. But God has done soo much for me, and continues every single day. I wouldn't have my marriage today without God. My husband and I had one of the most dysfunctional relationships before we were married, there was no faith, no trust, lots of pain and manipulation, infidelity, alcohol abuse, it was horrible. We went to 2 years of christian counseling, a year of it when we had broken up, and we were only there to learn how to stay friendly enough to still parent our children, it wasn't counseling to be back together. And I was adament that I never wanted to be with him again, I never wanted to go through the hell that was our relationship again, and I'd be damned if I ever gave him another chance, I wasn't even interested in trying again. But I kept getting this feeling, that I was supposed to try again, and at the time I had no clue that this was the power of God in my life, but I kept fighting it, like a little kid with their parent, I'd ignore it, argue with myself, say hell no was I going to give in and try again, but then it hit me that this was God, cuz it sure wasn't me I was really arguing with, I didn't want to try again so why would I need to fight with me about that? So finally I just prayed and I said "God, I really don't want to do this, but you know the big picture and I can only see today, so your will be done not mine, if this is what you want, and this is what is best for me, then I will do whatever you want me to, just lead the way, but if this is what I'm supposed to be doing, then you have to take all the pain, anger and resentment away that I have about our past, because I can't do it with all of this, and I can't get rid of it on my own, I've tried. So I am open to your will, take me where you want me to go" and almost instantly, within a few days, all of that anger, pain, jealousy, mistrust, all of it was gone, and I was just amazed, I had been fighting with all of this stuff for years and trying and trying to forgive and forget and release it all and to trust again, and nothing worked, and all of a sudden, it was all gone, and I knew God had taken it all away and I was amazed. I even tried to bring it back, and tried to get angry and mad, just to see, but I couldn't, it was truly gone. Suddenly I had loving feelings for him again that had been gone for a long time, it was like over night, one day I hated him and wanted nothing to do with him, and the next day I loved him and wanted to spend the rest of our lives together, and I knew I didn't get there by myself. I would have never given him or our relationship another chance if I had not turned my life over to God and told him he was in charge and that I gave up control. Alan & I got back together in June of last year after a year apart, and by September we were married, and we have been so happy since. We haven't had a real fight since we got back together, when that's all we did was fight before. Not that we don't argue sometimes, or disagree, but it's in a healthy way now. There's not a doubt in my mind about him being faithful, when that's all I had before were doubts, jealousy, absolutley no trust or faith. And I couldn't have done it without God's help, there's things we just can't do on our own, no matter how hard we try. And it's not just that we got back together, God truley changed us. We both prayed together, "God please change me" instead of wanting the other person to change, we prayed that we would change, and become what the other needed, and because we were both open to this divine intervention, it worked. There was a sermon at church a while back for singles about instead of trying to find that perfect person, why not try to be that person and God will bring someone into your life when YOU'RE ready, when you've focused on yourself. Alan is such a different person now than he was in the begining of our relationship, and so am I. We come back and apologize almost instanly when we know we're being crappy, when before we could go weeks without really talking. We are better people, and we have a better relationship only because we put God first in our lives and in our marriage. We pray together, we go to church together, and we let him be in control and we just listen. And this is really the first time I've shared this story with anyone. I didn't know how to tell people close to me who knew our history, and knew how much I disliked him, that suddenly I loved him. I figured if I said God did it, they would look at me like I was crazy and not believe me. ALOT of people were surprised when we said we were getting married all of a sudden, when they knew about our past, and out break-ups and getting back together, and all of that, suddenly we were getting married?! But I didn't know how to share this amazing thing that had happened to us. And I still really don't, but I'm getting better. It's one thing to put it in writing where only a few people can see it, but to go out and tell people and talk about it is another thing. But I'm sure I'll get there. But God didn't stop there either. We pray about everything, he helped my husband find a job that he could enjoy and like, that met our needs, he helped us find a house that fit our budget, in the area we needed, and the space we needed. We have just got done with a bakruptcy on a crappy house we bought back in 2000, and no one even wanted to rent to us until 2 years after the bankruptucy, and we were just about to give up and stay in the house we are in that it really too small for us and too far from our schools and everything else, and we prayed and said if we needed to stay here then we would, but if we could just find a house in the area we needed it would be so much better, and we had just decided to give up and I had this feeling that we really needed to just call this one last house that we had driven past and got the #, and we did and it happened to be an individual not a real estate place who turned us away at the mention of bankruptcy, and he didn't care about it, and we were approved, and we are moving in a few days. And I know without a shadow of a doubt, that it wasnt fate or coincidence, that it was God. And then when we didn't have the deposit $, we prayed, and suddenly God had shifted things around where we had it. And when money was getting really tight recently, and my contract labor job hadn't used me in almost a month, and it became clear that I needed a job, I prayed and said "God I really don't want to go out and get a different job, where this one pays me almost twice min. wage and lets me make my own hours, and another job isn't going to do that, but if I have to then I will. But if you can, I pray that my job gets more orders and more work so I can stay there." and within a few days I got the call I could come back to work, and I've been working 2 1/2 weeks now and I pray every single day that I can stay there and that they have enough work to keep me. And someone else may think its just coincidence, but I can feel God inside of me, and that sounds so weird if you don't know how that feels. But I feel him in my heart, and I know I only have these things because of him, and I thank him every single day, and I know all I have to do is ask and he will do it. It might not be exaclty how I think it should be done, or in the time I think it should be done, but God does it in his way in his time. But that's why it's HIS will be done, not mine. He meets all of our needs, maybe not all of our wants, but if we truly need something, he makes sure one way or another that we have it. And for that, I am truly thankful, and blessed.

Spring day

You know, as many years as I have lived in oklahoma, you would think I would get used to the crazy weather. But I still can't believe how beautiful and warm it was yesterday and how stinkin' cold it was today!
We took advantage of the nice day yesterday, and Starla & I went on a bike ride.
Starla getting ready to go!
In fact, we decided to ride the bike up to the school and have lunch with Roman. I have the little kid seat on my bike that sits in front of you, and she has gotten much taller since we rode it last, and her helmet like hits my chin now!! I can rest my chin on her head as we ride along! :)
The ride from the house to the school is pretty short, but on the way there it is mostly uphill, and against the wind!! And I am WAY out of shape! It took me about 15 mins. to get there, barely crawling by uphill. We apparantly need to go on more bike rides so I can get in better shape!!
Roman & Starla enjoying lunch!

Now the ride home of course was all downhill and the wind was at our back. It took 5 minutes to get home. How funny that it took us 15 to get there and 5 to get home! But we coasted most of the way home!!
I have got to do something to lose weight and get into shape. I have done really good this week staying on track with my weight watchers, but the last 2 weeks I didn't. I still managed to lose a bit, I didn't gain or anything, but maybe if I stayed on track better I could lose more. So far in 7 weeks I have lost 9 1/2 lbs, which granted is better than nothing, but I'd like to be losing at a much quicker rate. I really need to figure out how to get to the gym several days in a week, but I can't seem to make it happen. I have a friend that paid lots of money to go to the broadway clinic and get pills that are helping her lose lots of weight, like 12 lbs in the first week. I am about ready to do the same, but I don't think I can convince Alan to let me spend the $300 for the month to be on it........
Sigh.
I went clothes shopping today because I needed more 'professional' clothes for my teaching observations and school stuff. Which I love shopping, and I love new clothes. But I hate the process. I hate trying on clothes and seeing every angle of my body in the 15 mirrors available, much more than I am able to see at home, much more than I want to see. I hate finding something cute and trying it on and it looking like crap because I am overweight. I get so disgusted with myself, you would think that would be enough motivation to figure out a way to lose it, but yet I can't ever seem to do it. I get so mad at myself, like why can't I just lose weight? Why can't I just find time to work out, and why can't I eat better, blah blah blah. Sigh. I did do really well this week at being more active and eating healthy, so hopefully when I weigh in on monday it will result in a large weight loss, which will further motivate me to keep it up. I sure hope so.

My lil' fairy

Isn't she the cutest thing?
This is the fairy set I got for her at the medieval fair last year.

I love having a girl. :)

School days.....

School days..... Current mood: cheerful

So school is in full swing, crazy how fast it all goes by. Only a couple weeks until spring break, woo hoo!! Which means my hobby house hill retreat is almost here! I can't wait!!!!

I finally got into a classroom yesterday with my observation. I am in the 4th grade class, and my teacher seems very good. He has been a teacher since 1987, so I would hope he is good by now! But really, he is very good. I think I am going to really enjoy my observation. I didn't do much this first time, just observed, got all my contextual info (# of students, # of girls, # of boys, ethnicity of students, room layout, etc) and watched him teach. Next time he said he would put me to work, which is good. I like being busy instead of just watching. I also got to stop by the Special Ed. class and stay for 30 mins before I left. I love that room. I just want to spend more time in there. Maybe this weekend I will finally blog more about it, but I have a feeling it will be a very long winded blog, and I just don't have it in me at the moment.

I am tutoring a 2nd grade girl named Daisy in my reading class too. She is 7, and her mom is having twin girls this sunday. She also has a 2 year old brother, and two 6 year old brothers, but they aren't twins she says. She said her dad died several years ago while they were still in africa, and that they moved here not too long ago. Her 2 year old brother was born in africa (along with the rest of them) so I assume 'not too long ago' means in the last year or so! She said these new babies will be the first to be born in the USA, and she said "They will be the first white babies too, I think. I don't know." Which was such an odd statement! I don't know if she thinks that if you are born in the USA you are white, or if she knows her mom has a white boyfriend, or what. I said "Well, is your mom black?" (I assumed that she was, but I thought I would ask because you know what happens when you assume....) and she said "yes" and I said "well since the babies are coming from your mom, they will have part of her in them, so they won't really be white." I didn't want to ask if the daddy of the twins was white, since I'm not really sure she even knows since she said she didn't have a daddy anymore, and there wasn't a man at home (I had to ask who all lived at her house in our initial interview, as a part of my portfolio I am keeping on her tutoring) and she didn't mention any other guy. But who knows. She is very bright though, she has already read up to the 4th grade level in the passages I have to have her read. And she's only in the 2nd grade! So she really doesn't need tutoring, but her mom signed her up for it, so I get to learn on her! I asked if she liked living in Africa, and she said yes. That everyone lived so close together that she never had to ask if she could go over and play with someone, they were just allowed to go. She also said they didn't even have to ask to sleep over, they just could go over and sleep at eachother's houses. She said that they played in mud alot though, and got really dirty. I said playing in mud is fun! She agreed. I like meeting new kids. I can't wait to have my own classroom full of new kids.

In science we have been doing some fun experiments and such. Today we started a mealworm investigation, so we handled mealworms and drew and labled them and all that good stuff. Last time we made rockets our of empty film canisters, water & alka seltzers! Which reminds me, I need to ask any one who still uses film for cameras, to save me the little plastic film holders for me! I want enough for my future classroom, so we can make the rockets too. But since we are all digital, I don't know how I am going to get the little film holders!! So if you, or anyone you know uses real film still, save me the holders and I will figure out a way to get them from you! Thanks!

Roman, Student of the Month

Roman is Student of the Month this month for his classroom.
Here are the pics and video from the awards assembly.

Roman & Mrs. Poe (we love her!)

Roman got the lead part last year in the school play, and he just came home yesterday with his part in this year's show. In the show "The world of Dr. Suess" he is The cat in the hat. He's very excited. He is such a little performer. :)

He's just not that into you....

He's just not that into you.... Current mood: blessed

So my best friend Jamie & I went to go see that movie yesterday after we hit up the library sale. The movie was great. It was so stinkin' funny. Jamie looked over at me and said "You sure are laughing awfully hard for a married woman, what, do you think of me when you see these women?" Hee hee. I wasn't thinking about her at all. It was just REALLY funny. That, and one of the main characters, Gigi, was sooooo me, that it cracked me up. I was that girl back in my 'dating' days. That insecure, stalking, sure that every tiny little "sign" a guy gave meant he was secretly in love with me, pathetic girl. Yep, that was me. I was never cut out for the dating scene. I couldn't play the head games, I didn't understand 'the rules', I'm too emotional, and I get attached too easily. I'm soooo much better at the committed, loyal, marriage scene. That's where I belong. That movie made me want to come home and hug my hubby. He's my Ben Affleck (that character from the movie, not the actual Ben.....) You'll understand if you see the movie.

Wilson Cruz was in that movie too!!! I am such a My So-called Life fan, he was Ricky from that show. I still love him. Sigh. He was in the movie, and so was Busy Phillips, another favorite character, from my Dawson's creek days. Yes. I am a nerd, and I am not afraid to admit it. I love My So-called Life, and I love Dawson's creek. I was recently re-introduced to Jared Leto and his 30 Seconds to Mars band, he was Jordan Catalano from MSCL, sigh.

Oh yeah, I was talking about how much I love my husband right? :) I have such an amazing husband. Is he perfect? No. Do I ever get mad at him? Sure. Do we argue? Yes. Is he mine? Absolutely. Do I love him? With everything I've got. He works so hard for me and our family, he has put aside his dreams and aspirations to work at a job that will support us while I follow my dreams and aspirations. He loves me even when I am not very lovable. He makes me feel like I am the most beautiful woman on the planet even when I know I am not. We have been through soooo much in our years together. It's amazing what we have overcome. We have dealt with alcoholism, drug use, several bouts of infidelity, mental illness, and just other things that come along with a poorly functioning relationship. We even spent a year apart where we thought there was no coming back. But we found our way back, and we worked through it all, and we grew up and compromised and learn to communicate and it's just amazing to look back at where we once were to where we are today. And I really hope that the worst is behind us in life, but if it proves someday that it's not, I know that we are strong and that we can make it through anything together. I'm just thankful for my marriage, and for my husband. I've never fit into the dating scene, I did the whole single mother thing, twice, and it is no fun, I LOVE married life, so that's where I will be for the rest of my days. Side by side with my awesome husband. :)

Welcome to the Little Library

oh happy friday....

oh happy friday Current mood: loved

The weeks seem to just all run together these days, but even though they seem to fly by, I am always happy for the weekend. A chance to take a breath and relax for a moment! Time to get caught up on schoolwork!! (yeah, what fun!) Time to spend with my family. Time to just not be doing anything!

I had to clean Starla's room today, it was getting awful. That and move the changing table out of her room, because she is getting too big for it. My baby is growing up too fast! It's amazing how fast they grow. I mean I look at Bourbon sometimes and I can't believe he's already 10 years old. Where does the time go?!

I think we are going to have to get a storage shed. We have so much stuff. Granted, we need to get rid of some of it, but some of it I want to keep. We have this awesome antique daybed that used to be Alan's grandmothers out in our shed that I would like to keep either for Starla to have or just to have as a guest bed, but it's not going to be anytime soon. And my mom is giving me her beautiful wooden japanese carved curio cabinet that they got when we lived in Japan in the early 80's with her entire bell collection in it (it matches the entertainment center they already gave us that is in our bedroom) but we don't have any room for it right now, but I still want it. Because we haven't made a firm decision on if we are going to have another baby or not, we want to hang onto the crib and changing table, and all the various baby furniture and toys and such, but we just don't have the space to store it all. So I guess we are going to really have to look at renting a storage shed. Or alan thinks we need to go buy another shed, but I'm not sure we can afford it, or if I want to give up any space out back to put it. We shall see.

I called my school yesterday to see if they had placed me with a teacher yet or not, and they did! Woo hoo! I am now going to be with a Mr. Ray who teaches 4th grade. I've never observed a male elementary school teacher, so that should be at least interesting I hope. I did meet him when I was in the other 4th grade class. He seems very no-nonsense, by the book kinda guy. But I could be wrong. That's just the impression that I got when I met him. But I get to stay at my school, and visit my Special Ed class, and visit with my little Katie in there, so that makes me happy.

I must be gaining a larger blog reading audience. The stats of how many posts, and how many views and such is always right there when I'm posting a blog, so I glance at it, and generally let's say I have 3 posts in a week, I will probably have 60 views. So out of my 130+ friends here on myspace I figure about 20 of them must read my blogs consistently, which is better than I would expect. I love to blog, and although I enjoy the audience and I like knowing people must be interested in what I have to say, I really blog mostly for myself (although sometimes I just blog to tell people about something cool that I have found or know about or whatever). The way that I work out my thoughts is writing about them, that's why I've always kept a journal or diary. I need to write about stuff to reflect and process it all, and sometimes I don't even see the 'big picture' until I go through that process. So I would blog even if no one read it, I could never be the person that checks the views and thinks "no one's reading my blogs, I guess I won't take the time to write them anymore", because I love blogging, with or without an audience. But, that being said, last week I think I had 2 blogs, maybe 3, and my views was a little over 100!! And this week I have 5 posts so far and I have 164 views!! That's amazing to me. Either more of my friends are checking out my blogs, or someone is trying to catch up and reading a whole lot, lol. Which has happened before, I've had friends tell me they were reading all my blogs as far back as they go and my views would jump in numbers while they did that. Anyways, I just thought I would share because I was rather impressed that so many people have read my blogs, or a few people have read them a BUNCH of times. So thank you, my wonderful readers, for being interested in my life. That always feels good that people care. :)

off to a rocky start.....

Off to a rocky start.... Current mood: determined

So my 30 hour observation for this semester started last week. Since I had a class cancelled I was able to go last monday at 2pm, which was the set time to go meet your teacher and set up a schedule if you were able to make it. I was surprised when the secretary of the school walked me into a class with tiny little bitty kids. They had placed me in Pre-K with 4 year olds! Don't get me wrong, I like little kids, but my major is Elementary Education, which covers grades 1-8. So my observation has to fall within my certification range. But I thought, what the hey, I will stick around until school gets out, it's only an hour, and it will be fun. And it was, I had a good time hanging out with the 4 year olds and chatting with the teacher. So at 3pm I went to the office and explained my dilemma and said I would normally come on tuesdays anyways, and could I come back the next day and have someone in my certification range. They said sure. I cam back the next morning and was again surprised when teh secretary led me to the special education class. Again, I don't mind Special Ed. kids, but that's not my certification. You have to major in Special Ed. to teach special ed. and I'm not. But the principal was gone for the afternoon and it was either I stay there or go home and wait for a new teacher. I stayed my 3 hours and hoped my teachers would let me count this time towards my observation even though I wasn't really placed yet (which they said was fine). I fell in love with this Special Ed. class! I really enjoyed it!! Special Ed. has changed a ton since I was in school. They now do what is called Inclusion. The experts have decided that keeping Special Ed. students away from "regular" students is harmful emotionally and socially, and is really hindering them. So now unless a kid just can't function in a regular classroom, all Special Ed. kids are mainstreamed into regular classrooms and will just have a plan in place that moderates what work that child can do. Sometimes they go out with a specialist for part of the day, etc. But they try to keep them in with their peers as much as possible. So this class that I was in last week was made up of the severely disabled or disturbed students that can't function all day in a class room. There were a couple that were autistic, one that had attachment disorder, etc. Several of them had to sit behind giant cardboard boxes (think fridge boxes) that enclosed their desks. It was very interesting to me. I may elaborate more on this experience in a later blog, but I'm getting off track here. So after my 3 hours in that classroom I went into the office and told the secretary that I would be back the next tuesday and asked if I could have a new teacher then, and she said that was fine. So I went in yesterday. A new secretary that I hadn't seen before (who was kinda scary and had a bite to her manner which made it seem like she was yelling at you even though she wasn't yelling at you) said "Your teacher isn't expecting you until friday." and I was like, I don't even know who my teacher is, and i said I would be here on tuesday. So she walked me into a classroom, of 4th graders (woo hoo!) and the teacher said "I get another one?" and the secretary said "You already have a UCO student?" and she said yes, that hers had come friday and would be back on friday (thus not expecting me until friday). So the secretary took me back to the office where she called the principal (who never seems to be there) and he said no, the teacher couldn't have 2 teacher candidates, but that he didn't know where to put me then, and to just go ahead and spend my time with the 4th grade teacher this week and they would fine me some place else. (seriously?!). So I went BACK to the 4th grade class, where they were lining up for lunch. The teacher said she had errands to run on lunch and the class wouldn't be back for an hour and that I was free to take a break and do whatever I wanted for that hour. She was right next door to the special ed. class I had worked in the week before, so I just went in there and worked for that hour. (I am absolutely in love with this little 1st grade girl named Katie, who is autistic, in there and was thrilled to get to be back in there!) So I had a great time again in Special Ed. for an hour, and then went back into the 4th grade class when they got back. They worked at thier desks while she & I chatted about teaching and her experiences and such for about 20 mins. and then they had to go practice for their upcoming play. So they were gone an hour while the teacher and I made copies and talked in the teacher's lounge for about 45 mins and then watched them practice for about 15 mins. and then went back to the class for the last 20 mins where we played a game. After my time was up I went to the office and asked if I would have a new teacher next week and they said yes. My UCO people had told me to call them if they didn't get me placed again this week, so I called them as I was pulling out of the school, and they wanted me to come in today and fill out a change of school form and get moved to a new school!! I really don't want to change schools. I like this school, I love the teachers I have met so far, all 3 of them have been wonderful and have given me great advice and insight. I want to be able to visit the Special. Ed class each week when I go, and I can't do that if I change schools! I went to my teacher today and said "Do I have to change?" like a little whiney kid. And she said it wasn't up to her, it was up to the placement woman who had told me on the phone yesterday that I needed to change, but that I should go explain that I really like the school and I want to stay and see what she says. So after class I went to her office and begged to stay at that school. She said ok, if they could get me placed by next week, but if they had any other problems that I was going to have to change schools. So fingers crossed that they find me a teacher to observe by next week!!! So my observation is off to a rather rocky start. But I bet I've learned more just by getting shifted around than I have when I spend the whole time in one classroom! The Special Ed. teacher was teacher of the year for several years in the school, and has taught for 30+ years and I liked her (she had some strange behaviors I thought, but I don't deal with the kids that she does on a daily basis, so maybe that's what they need, I don't know. Again I'll have to write a blog just about that some other time.) And the 4th grade teacher was awsome from what I gathered in conversation with her, since I didn't really observe her teaching. But she said how she stopped moving on in the math book when her students obviously weren't getting multiplication and how she spent 3 weeks on it while all of the other classes went on and started division and such, but how she thought it was silly to keep going when they didn't understand, and she took the time to make sure they knew what they were doing. Which is wonderful! Most times teachers are like "oh well," and keep going becuse they have to stay "on track". But I think it's more important to make sure the kids learn what they need to, and it's refreshing to see a teacher who agrees since they don't seem to exist much anywhere. She also said how she hated the Basal readers (the reading books rpvided by textbook companies with all teh short stories in them) and how if we want kids to hate reading we should use them, but that if we want them to get excited and interested in reading we should use real books, and she was working on just reading different books and doing projects based on the books. Which again, is exactly what we are being taught to do at UCO, yet 99% of teachers use the basal readers and kids are bored out of thier minds!! So I thought she was a great teacher, and I hope whomever I am placed with is like her and not the 'traditional' teacher. We shall see....

Our Valentine's Day

The boys got to go on a scavenger hunt for valentine's goodies & treats
They each got 5 clues, which led them all through the house, and then they found their gifts.

It was fun!

I tried to make them a special valentines breakfast. I cut out a heart shaped hole in bread and fried an egg in it, but after it was done cooking, it no longer really looked like a heart. Oh well, I tried.

I took the hearts that I cut out and made little heart shaped french toast out of them, and then rounded it off with chocolate covered strawberries. Yum!

Then later that evening, Alan & I got to go to our B&B retreat!

This was the main house, it has several rooms in it as well, but we got a cottage instead.

This was our cottage

The livingroom

The awesome bed made out of trees!!

The heart shaped jacuzzi tub! We have decided this is a must have in our next house!!

Our breakfast

Us out front as we were leaving. It was so nice, and relaxing! We had dinner in from BJ's brewery, and rented "FireProof". Then the next morning we got to lounge around since check-out wasn't until noon. Then we got to go to the mall in norman for a while and then have a nice lunch before heading home. It was VERY nice!

Hope everyone else had a wonderful Valentine's day!

The '25 things about me' Survery

Saturday, February 14, 2009

25 things you might not have known about me
Current mood: cheerful

My turn to do the survery, woo hoo. 25 things about me that you may not have known.

1. I lived in Japan from the ages of 5-8, so I can count to 10 in japanese with ease, it's stored in the part of my brain that knows how to count in english, since I basically learned both at the same time, always there, I don't ever forget it. So the theory that you should teach children a second language as they are learning their first is actually a pretty darn good idea.

2. I have always been fascinated with twins, and hoped I would have a set! I can't really imagine trying to care for 2 infants at once, but the idea of twins is enthralling to me.

3. I have had the name Starla picked out for my little girl since I was a teenager, from the Smashing pumpkins song. I've always loved stars, so the name was the most perfect name to me!

4. The only time I've ever been in an ambulance was when I was 17. I rear-ended a car that had just rear-ended a car, and in the process hit my mouth on the steering wheel. It broke the bone above my teeth, and all of my front teeth were no longer pointing down, but instead pointing into my mouth towards my throat. Blood was rapidly coming out of my mouth. The oh-so-friendly paramedics actually asked me if I would like to get a different ride. Um, my car was totalled, I was by myself, we were in the middle of the highway, blood coming out of my mouth. Maybe I should call a cab? I assume they thought I might not have insurance and were trying to spare me the cost of the ride, but I was a kid, I was on my parent's insurance. The ER dr. had to pull my teeth back into place, but they couldn't numb me because the bone was broken on the nerve and they were unable to get the medicine in there. Instead of holding my head still and in place, I kept following the Dr's hand as he pulled forward, it took a while. It hurt.... ALOT!

5. I was in love with Jonathan Brandis (Sidekicks, Ladybugs, The neverending story part 2, "It" by stephen king) when I was a teenager. I had posters of him covering my walls and ceiling! Sigh, sadly he committed suicide like in 2002. What a waste.

6. I owned and operated a Candy Bouquet Franchise with my mom in Midwest City from 2001-2003. It was such a wonderful opportunity and I learned a lot, but it is really hard running your own business. But I had sooo much fun creating and making candy bouquets!

7. I have wanted to be an author since I was in the 1st grade. I swear I am going to publish at least one book before I die, but I would like to publish many, many books. I have so many great stories in my head..... it's getting the time to put them on paper, and the motivation, that is hard.

8. I had breast implants and a lift in Jan. 2000 at the age of 21, I got pregnant with Roman in Feb 2000. What a silly, silly girl! Who gets work done to fix what happened during a pregnancy, when they actually plan on getting pregnant again in the future (although I didn't plan on it to be THAT quick!)? I should have waited until I was all done. I plan on getting it all done again in a few years, due to the fact that Roman jumped on my back as I was laying face down on our hardwood floors about a year and a half ago, and he caused one of my implants (which are behind the muscle) to shift in place (which means it pulled my muscle, I could hardly lift anything for a week after that) and now it moves when it shouldn't and gets all out of place in there. It doesn't hurt per say, but it is the oddest feeling ever, very uncomfortable. I know, probably more information than you ever wanted to know, lol.

9. I was homeschooled from sophmore-senior year of high school. I don't recommend it, I missed out on so much.

10. I used to be fascinated with witchcraft, and actually was a practicing Wiccan when I was a teenager. Yep, I practiced spells, prayed to the goddess, and worshipped nature. It took me a long time of dabbling in other religions before I found Christianity, or maybe it found me.

11. I couldn't cook hardly at all (you know, hamburger helper, boiled noodles, etc) until I started teaching myself in around 2003. I love the fact that I can find just about any recipe and make it (really, if you can read, you can cook). I love experimenting and creating new meals.

12. I took a cake decorating class at the age of 16, but didn't get into cake decorating until I made Roman's Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory birthday cake in 2005.

13. I am left-handed.

14. I am the youngest of 4 children, and the only girl. My brother Nate is 18 months older, Mr brother Mark is 6 years older, and my brother Scott died of Cystic Fibrosis at the age of 17 when I was 13. I always wanted a sister, which makes me want to have another girl so Starla can have a sister.

15. I'm fascinated with multiple personalities and have read every single book I can find having to do with people that have had it.

16. I probably believed in Santa way longer than most kids. I don't remember when I stopped, but I still get really sad that he isn't real and wish that he was. I like to think fairies exist in some other place too. I believe in magic.

17. I get mad at myself if I don't make an A on everything. Because I know that I can, and the only time I don't make an A is when I don't take the time to actually do the assignment right, or study like I should. So when I make a B, I know it's because of effort not ability and I get mad at myself.

18. I've been on the President's, Vice-President's, and/or Dean's honor roll every semester since I went back to college in 2005. (Yes, I'm a geek and I am proud!)

19. I do think that DisneyWorld is the happiest place on earth, and am dying to take Starla there! I think Walt Disney was a genius, regardless of how corrupt or crazy his empire is now.

20. If I won the lottery (of course you have to play to win, and we never do) I would share it with all the people I care about. I know probably everyone says that, but seriously I want to get rich just because I could give more to people, I LOVE giving gifts and spoiling people, it is what I do and it makes me sooooo happy. So if I had a giant amount of money, I would buy houses and cars, and set up college funds for my friend's kids, and help people I don't even know. Why keep a bunch of money that really you don't need, when you could share it?

21. I can't hardly pick a favorite anything, I don't know why. I like sooo many different things, I can't ever pick out a favorite food, book, movie, music, etc. I like it all! Whenever someone asks me my favorite, I go blank, I can't pick one of anything.

22. Lol, that being said, 8 is my favorite number. That never changes, always has been, always will be.

23. I always say that I am a walking contradiction. (see # 21 & 22), although I'm not sure that's exactly the correct term for it. I can be 2 opposite things at the same exact time, all the time. For example I say that I am a june cleaver trapped in a gothic loving, peirced, tattooed person. I'm loud and outgoing, but I'm shy & quiet. I'm full of self-confidence and full of self-doubt. It's like I have the polar opposites going on at all times. I'm so weird.

24. I was meant to be a mother. My life would have never been complete if I didn't have kids. Sometimes I don't even think I really existed until I had kids.

25. Serendipity is my favorite word. I love how it sounds, how it looks and what it means. It's such a wonderful word.

There you go, way too much info about me that you could possible ever want.

Happy Valentine's Day!

As of last weekend we now have a piano (Thanks Aunt Theresa!)The kids LOVE it. Roman already figured out, by ear, how to play twinkle twinkle litte star, and both boys can play some of the music from Star Wars (thanks to Alan of course!). Starla just sits down and hits the keys and sings, and makes up her own songs, it's so darn cute! She always brings friends with he too, as seen in the pic above. Her toys like to play piano too! I can't wait for them to learn how to really play!!
So for the past couple of years, I have gotten the boys valentines books for valentines day, so when Roman asked last week if they were going to get their book, I knew it was time to mix it up some. (I'm a creature of habit sometimes, I can't help it) So after much thought, I have decided to send them on a valentines scavenger hunt in the morning! We already got them mailboxes last month that we keep on the bookshelf, and we leave them notes every few days (especially on the days I got to school, because when they wake up I am gone and I don't get home until 4:30 or 5pm!) or little treats. So in the morning they will find a little note in their mailbox that will send them on a hunt throughout the house with clues to their next spot. Each spot will have a little treat, which will get bigger each time (a sucker, a little treat bag, a box of candy hearts, a box of chocolates,_ until they get to the end (5 clues leads to the 6th spot!) which will be a toy. Starla just gets to get all her treats in one sitting when she wakes up. I can't wait to see the boys scramble around to the next spot, finding new clues! It's going to be fun!
Then, at 4pm Alan & I get to head to our B&B in norman (thanks again to Aunt Theresa who is going to stay here with the kids!) where we are ordering in so we don't have to fight the crowds, and enjoying some adult time! Score! :)
Hope everyone has a wonderful Valentine's day, no matter how you spend it!

Hodge podge

My 3 rugrats, they are getting too big too fast!!
Starla's Valentine's projects

Isn't this cute? I am a part of an organization called Parents As Teachers, it's free through the public school system. They offer resources and support for parents of kids before they go to school. I have formed a great friendship with Rae, the woman that is my PAT sponser. We meet with her once a month, and she always brings fun things for Starla to do, these were her valentines crafts!

And last but not least, Starla's potty chart! She is getting so much better! And She LOVES getting a sticker when she uses the potty!

Just a hodge podge of stuff.

School bells are ringing.....

school bells are ringing Current mood: adventurous

I am excited to see what grade I get to observe this semester! I have to call tomorrow and set up my first meeting on tuesday, and I will get to meet my teacher and such. I have to complete 30 hours in 9 weeks, however I would like to do it. I think I teach a lesson this time too, last 30 hour observation I was just observing and helping out. That teacher had me grading papers most days. I decorated a bulletin board too, woo hoo. I am so going to use and abuse everyone I know when I have my own classroom. I will talk people into helping me decorate each year before school starts, and come in and help work with students and tutor or read or whatever, or help me grade papers, or cut out stuff for bulletin boards, or whatever I happen to need. So if you have any interest in that, let me know, because I will use you! Alan has already told me he would be my 'living history' actor, when I need someone to come to class as someone famous in history and act like he is them, answering questions and such. So anyone else that wants to do that too, I will use you. Or if you have an interesting job, you can come talk to my kids about it. I have tons of ways to use and abuse you. :)

I just hope that I get a job in a school that lets me teach my way, and doesn't limit me to only using textbooks and worksheets, and dull and boring stuff. I don't think I could handle it, I would be bored and get burnt out faster than the kids could. I hate the fact that most classrooms teach that way, and that's why kids hate school. I want to have fun and be creative and give kids time to explore and investigate and figure things out. I want them to have a classroom where talking is fine, it doesn't have to be quiet all the time, where groups work together on projects and enjoy learning. I think kids would learn so much more if we made it more interesting then "hey read this sections and fill out this worksheet" ya know? I mean that's not really learning at all. Yet in 90% of classrooms, that is how the day goes.

While I am on my school soapbox, let me encourage everyone to collect boxtops for education (general mills I think), campbell's soup labels and Nestle Pure Water labels. These companies offer the schools $0.10 per label up to like $2,000 or something like that a year, and all you have to do is save them from the products you already buy and turn them into a school. If you have kids, send them to school with them. If you don't have kids, give them to a family member or friend with kids, or send them my way (I will even reimburse your postage if you mail them to me!). Schools are so hard up for cash, and I think it's such an easy way to help raise money for schools to just save these things. The boxtops are on like everything, from cereal, to baking mixes, to diapers, to snack foods, pilsbury cans, everything!! So DON'T THROW THEM AWAY!! It's like throwing money away!! Yeah, maybe just a dime at a time, but if everyone collected these things and gave them to schools, they could get the extra $2,000 a year, which they need so desperately. Look at it as your civic duty! Helping your community, helping the next generation, funding education! (Have I got you motivated yet?)

If you are REALLY motivated, you should think about volunteering in a school You don't even have to have kids to do it, just go up to your local school and go into the office and ask if they have anything you could volunteer to do. You could read to kids in the library, help out at recess, work the crosswalk, whatever. Sign up to be a substitute teacher if you have the time. You could get paid to hang out with some kids and make an impact! Volunteer to help tutor afterschool, or at your local library. Do something for your community and just because you can. I think our world would be such a better place if everyone volunteered in the community once in a while. Ya know?

I feel such a pull to work in a school in perhaps a lower socio-economic status. I want to help kids that may not have help anywhere else. I want to motivate and encourage and convince kids that they can do anything they want to do. I want to be that teacher that pushes kids to their pull potential and helps them to realize just what they can do. I want the kids that no one else wants. Granted it will be harder, and I will have to figure out how to handle it, but I want the kids that might be on the wrong track, who I can help turn around and make a difference in thier lives and show them someone cares about them. For me working in Edmond would never be enough. Everyone wants to work in Edmond where they have money for funding, and the kids come from good homes and have stable lives (in general), and the test scores are high and thriving, and it's the "cush" job, with the smart kids who are going to succeed despite your teaching, not because of it, who you probably couldn't mess up if you tried! I want to go into a class with crappy scores and make them better, I want a classroom full of struggling learners so I can teach them that they can do it, and that I believe in them. I want the kids that think that there isn't any hope, and that there isn't any way out of a crappy life, so I can give them the tools that they need to succeed in life and to change their lives. I want to make a difference. I want to help. Maybe that is naive and idealistic of me, but that's what I feel drawn to.

Ok, I'm done with my novel, I will step down from my soap box. Thanks for 'listening' to the rantings and ravings of an educational lunatic. :)

Lazy Saturday

Lazy Saturday Current mood: mellow

I do too much. Most everyone knows that. I just feel this need to be going and doing something. I had told myself I was not going to plan anything for this weekend and just get caught up on School stuff and house stuff, and such. But of course after getting up this morning, my head is spinning with plans I could be making "It's a beautiful day, I should take the kids to the park. Oh oh, we have a free afternoon, we should go to the mall, I want to check out the disney store and Starla needs new clothes....The children's place! Oh oh, I wonder if the zoo would be too packed today? We should do something......" (my self-talk). And I had to talk myself out of it and remind myself that I need to stay home today, which is what I did. I did get most of my school reading done, which is good, but I still have more I need to do before Monday. I did get my kitchen cleaned, swept & mopped, but that was it as far as the house was concerned. I really need to clean my room. But I relaxed. I read some for pleasure. I got to watch some shows. I still am not feeling good. There were several times this morning that I found myself nodding off into my science book, trying to stay awake cuz the sinus pressure in my head was so strong all I wanted to do was close my eyes and go to sleep. But it went away (thanks to clariten-d!). I always feel guilty for just hanging out and not really doing anything, becuase not only is my to-do list a mile long, but I figure if I'm not going to be doing what I SHOULD be doing, then I should be going out and taking the kids out and having family time, or whatever. So I have to force myself to just relax, and talk myself out of feeling guilty. It's a work in progress, but I'm getting there.

Today was nice. I have this need to read and read and read. I finished The Time Traveler's Wife thursday. That was so heavy and draining on me (although a fantastic book, everyone should read it) that I really needed something light to follow that up. So yesterday I read, the entire thing, Tori Spelling's book about her life. I never really had any thoughts about Tori Spelling in general, until over the summer when I caught her show on oxygen, and I loved it! She is so freaking funny, she cracks me up. And although she still isn't totally normal (what celebirty is) she seemed so real and down to earth. So I got her book, but haven't gotten around to reading it, so now I have. Woo hoo! (My bookshelves are full of books I buy that I want to read, but never seem to have the time) SO then I realized I never finished Ron Clark's essential rules for teaching (I watched the Ron Clark story on Lifetime over the christmas break. I want to be such a great teacher that they make a lifetime movie out of me!), so I picked that back up today and will finish it tonight. Then what next....... oh all the possibilities!!

I got to watch some of my Paula Deen shows today too. I love Paula Deen. I think somewhere in another life I must have been a southern, red-neck woman (joking of course, as I don't believe in other lives). I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Dolly Parton & Paula Deen, not to mention Gretchen Wilson's song "redneck woman" Yes yes, I know, you are so disappointed in me. My dirty little secret (not really, most everyone knows I love country music! ) I love Dolly & Paula's twang and accent, and funny little southern quirks. They crack me up. I want to be able to cook like Paula some day. She rocks.

I start my 2nd 30 hour observation of a classroom next week. I got my first pick school (you are asked to pick a district, and your top 3 choices of schools you want to be placed in. EVERYONE wants edmond at UCO. I don't know if it's because most everyone lives out there, or because it is the 'cream of the crop' schools. I don't really care, I don't want anything to do with Edmond. So although most of the gals there don't even get any of their top 3 choices, because they all choose edmond, I get my #1 choice because I choose midwest city!) I am excited to see what grade I get this time. I got 6th grade last time. And I requested 4th grade for my student teaching, so I kinda hope I get a younger grade this time, just to balance it out. Although I don't want to teach the younger ones, but an observation there wouldn't hurt. I hope I get a great teacher that I can learn a ton from, instead of a teacher I can learn how NOT to be. We shall see.

I am about to go watch my Grey's anatomy & Private practice. As soon s I kick Roman and his little best friend Matthew (sleep over, woo hoo) off of the Wii here in a few moments, and then put Starla to bed, and finish my relaxing night.

My Myspace blog post from today for lack of time or desire to post another one on here.....

Date: Feb 5, 2009

The Time Traveler's Wife Current mood: groggy

So my friend Liz loaned me this book back over the summer, lol, but I just got around to reading it, and it is FANTASTIC! It is very strange, and interesting, and thought-provoking, and emotional, and weird, and disturbing, and..... just so many things all at once. I couldn't get through it fast enough, and spent quite a bit of time reading, and finishing it today. I started it like last week, but could only read a bit here and there through the hustle and bustle of life. But I managed to squeeze in some down time today, even though I have lots of stuff that needs to be done.

Roman stayed home sick today, which was actually kinda nice because he entertained Starla all day, allowing me to get lost in my book for longer periods of time than I would have gotten to! All 3 of the kids have had some sort of cold of varying degrees for the past few days, and I either have it as well, or my sinuses are just thrown into whack, but either way I feel miserable. Blech. I am looking forward to this weekend, because I don't have anything planned and I really need some time to get caught up on housework, schoolwork, etc. And just time to not be rushing here and there from one thing to another.

I am excited that tomorrow after I get out of class I get to go out to The Affair of the Heart craft show at the fair grounds and spend the afternoon walking through that enjoying myself. Starla will be at my moms, and the boys will be at school, and Alan will either be at work (or at home if it is an early day), and I can just spend some time looking at all of the pretties and relaxing!! Woo hoo. After that, since I finished reading the book "The Tale of Despereaux" to the boys this week, I told them I would take them to the dollar movies tomorrow after school to go see the movie, so that should be fun. After that Matt will come get Bourbon for the weekend, and then we have nothing else planned besides Church on sunday and school on Monday. WOO HOO!!!
